Weather Instrument: Barometer

Barometer is a standard weather station equipment used a lot. Barometer is used to measure pressure in the air(which is also known as barometric pressure). Usually, a low pressure in a region indicates storms while a high air pressure in a region indicates fair weather. The very first Barometer was first built unintentionally by Gasparo Berti, sometime between 1640 and 1643 while Evangelist Torricelli is the one credited with inventing the barometer.

A Barometer can measure the pressure using water, air, wine, or mercury. Measuring the atmosphere's pressure tendency will help forecasting short-term weather changes. Surface weather analysis are using different pressure measurements to help find surface troughs, high pressure systems, and frontal boundaries.

Up till now, there are 4 types of barometer, they're:
Water Based Barometers
Also called Weather Glass, Thunder Glass, Storm Glass or a Goethe Barometer which consists of a sealed glass container half filled with water.
This type of barometer can be easily made at home. A narrow spout connects to the body below the water level and rises above the water level, where it is open to the atmosphere. If the current air pressure is lower than the pressure when container was sealed, the water level in the spout will rise above the body water level; On the other hand, if the current pressure is higher, the water level in the spout will drop below the body water level.
Mercury Barometers
Mercury barometers aren't produced anymore in Europe as per June 5, 2007, European Union directive restricted the sale of mercury which is the main material of this barometer. Mercury Barometers are usually a glass tube of about 76 cm height, closed at one end, with an open mercury-filled reservoir at the base. The mercury in the tube will adjusts itself until the mercury column's weight balances the atmospheric force exerted on the reservoir.
Aneroid Barometers
An aneroid barometer is using aneroid cells which is a small, flexible metal box made from an alloy of beryllium and copper. Small changes in external air pressure cause the cell to expand or contract that will drive mechanical levers such that the tiny movements of the capsule are amplified and displayed on the face of the aneroid barometer.
Barographs
Aneroid barometer mechanism is used in barographs to either move a needle on a smoked foil or a pen upon paper, which are both attached to a drum moved by clockwork.
